Aussies want SG rise

A survey by the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) shows that most Australians surveyed want the superannuation guarantee to rise. Seventy-five per cent of those surveyed want the SG to increase, with 1375 Australians surveyed in October.

Respondents were asked about their views on superannuation, the Age Pension, and standard of living expectations for retirement.

Key findings of the study include:

  • Seventy-five per cent of respondents support the SG rising to 12 per cent by 2025

  • Twelve per cent said the rate shouldn’t change from its current level of 9.5 per cdent

  • Thirteen per cent said they were unsure

  • Three-quarters also said they would struggle to live on the Age Pension, which is currently $24,551 per year for a single and $37,000 a year for a couple

  • About a third said they could have a comfortable lifestyle in retirement on less than $50,000 per year

  • Members approve of funds being active on ESG issues, with 64 per cent saying they approved of more corporate governance

  • The same number approve of funds taking action on climate change

  • Almost 60 per cent approve of funds increasing gender diversity
