ETF surge with largest inflows for the year - Global ETF FlowWatch Series - September 2019

Worldwide ETFs surged in September 2019, amassing the largest inflows of the year to the tune of US$77 billion amid broad recovery in the market. Equity ETFs recorded US$47 billion in net new money, followed by bond and commodity ETF products garnering US$25 billion and US$4 billion, respectively. ETFs assets achieved a record high of US$5.788 trillion during the month.

In the U.S., equity ETFs accumulated US$24 billion in net new flows, while bond products gathered US$13 billion in net subscriptions. Notably, Equity US – Large-cap pulled in nearly US$19 billion in net flows and was the best-selling category. Commodity ETFs collected nearly US$4 billion in net new cash.

In Europe, ETFs experienced a noticeable increase of US$21 billion in net new money, driven primarily by nearly US$14 billion deposited into equity ETFs. ETF flows in Asia gained US$13 billion in new investor money due to large inflows of US$5.8 billion in China’s SOE ETFs.

Bosera CSI Central-SOEs Technological Innovation Index ETF Fund was the largest new ETF launch in September 2019, accumulating US$2.35 billion in inflows. The ETF tracks the CSI Central-SOEs Technological Innovation Index.
